Two members of Ballajura Community College’s Police Rangers volunteer team were acknowledged for three decades of combined service with a special presentation recently.

Ray Roberts, BCC’s Head of Department for the Senior School ACCESS program, and Aimee Davies, a former student, received service medals from Ian Britza MLA, Member for Morley at the College.

Mr Roberts received his award for 20 years’ service as Unit Coordinator and Mrs Davies for 10 years as a volunteer instructor.

“It is great to be able to give honour where it is due,” Mr Britza said.

“Mr Roberts was instrumental in forming the WA Police Rangers program at the College in 1997 and under his leadership the Police Rangers has won many State awards.

“His commitment to the program is very much appreciated by the College Community.”

Mr Roberts said it was an honour to receive the award and thanked College staff for their support, in particular Principal Cheryl Townsend and Deputy Principal Jennifer Dickman.

“I would also like to thank Senior Sergeant Ian North, Officer in Charge of the Ballajura Police Station, a long-time supporter of the Unit.”

Mr Roberts said many hours of volunteer work went into Police Rangers each week.

“Everyone who joins the Police Rangers knows that volunteering is important to the community and it’s their enthusiasm that keeps me going,” he said.

“Mrs Davies is one of those volunteers. She started as a recruit when she was a Year 8 student, and after completing her education at the College became an instructor and has been an active volunteer on the program ever since.

“In fact, she met her husband when they were both Police Rangers at the College and they were married last year.”

There are currently almost 50 students from Years 8 to 12 in the Police Rangers program. Activities include weekly parades where the group learns leadership and life skills and there are also opportunities to attend camps and excursions throughout the year.
