Innovative Teacher + Great Students + Community Service = Cane Toad Traps for KTBs

canetoad1 canetoad2

On 2 February 2009, following an invitation from committed and enthusiastic teacher, Ballajura Community College’s Mark Arrantash, Sandy Boulter from the Kimberley Toad Busters gave a cane toad presentation to Mark’s Design and Technology Class. Mark had previously discussed the possibility of making traps in class with Dean Goodgame from the Kimberley Toad Busters. The students then undertook a study of the cane toad problem in Australia.

Students fabricated Cane Toad traps, cut material to size, and used a Magna Bender to fold the mesh before making one way doors and fitting shade cloth. These traps are so well designed and built that they will be used in the field at the cane toad battle out at the north east corner of Lake Argyle, to help save the precious Ramsar wetlands from the cane toad.

For a full account of the project and more information about the Kimberley Toad Busters, visit the KTB website.
